Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Ensuring the Safety of Your Electrical Equipment

At White Testing, we understand the importance of maintaining safe electrical equipment in your workplace. Our Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) service is designed to help you meet your safety obligations while minimising disruption to your operations.

What is PAT?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical equipment to ensure it’s safe for use. This includes any equipment that has a plug and is used in the workplace, from computers and printers to kettles and power tools.

Why is PAT Important?

  • Safety: Regular testing helps prevent electrical accidents in the workplace.
  • Legal Compliance: Many insurance policies and health and safety regulations require regular PAT.
  • Cost Savings: Identifying and addressing issues early can prevent costly equipment failures.
  • Peace of Mind: Know that your electrical equipment is safe for your employees and customers to use.

Our PAT Process

1

Pre-Testing Consultation

  • We discuss a testing schedule to ensure minimal disruption to your operations.
  • For larger premises, we recommend providing a building map to ensure comprehensive coverage.

2

On-Site Preparation

  • Our technicians arrive with a detailed Method Statement/Job sheet.
  • A Risk Assessment is completed onsite to minimize any associated risks.

3

Visual Inspection

Our technicians carefully examine:

  • Plugs
  • Flexes & cables
  • Socket-outlets
  • Switches

4

Technical Testing

We conduct a series of tests, including:

  • Earth Continuity: Crucial for Class 1 equipment (e.g., kettles) that rely on earthing for safety.
  • Insulation Resistance: Measures the effectiveness of the item’s insulation.
  • RCD (Residual Current Device) Test: For extension leads with built-in RCDs.

5

Reporting & Labeling

  • Safe items are labeled as passed.
  • Any item deemed unsafe will have a failed label applied.
  • We’ll inform you immediately about any failed items and note them on the Job Sheet.

6

Post-Testing Actions

  • It’s the client’s responsibility to repair or remove failed items from use.
  • Upon request, we can disable failed items by cutting the plug off or the cable at the item end.

Common PAT Issues We Encounter

  • Improvised Wiring: Such as cables with two plugs or makeshift extension leads.
  • Fuse Tampering: For example, replacing fuses with foil.
  • Incompatible Plugs: European plugs forced into UK sockets.
  • Overloaded Adaptors: Which can cause overheating and fire risks.
  • Daisy-Chained Extension Leads: Never plug one extension lead into another.

Frequency of Testing

The frequency of PAT depends on the type of equipment and its environment.

For example:

  • A power tool used on a construction site needs more frequent testing than a lamp in a hotel room.
  • For detailed guidance, we recommend checking the HSE.gov.uk website.
